  1. Create a backup of your Moodle content and save the file to your computer
    1. Access the Moodle course
    2. In the Administration block, click the Backup link. The Backup settings page is displayed
    3. Accept all the default settings and click Next. The Include page is displayed
    4. Deselect the News forum check box. This forum is NOT compatible with Canvas


      If you are backing up a Project or Training site, the check boxes in the User data column will be active. If you want to include user data, make sure that the User data check boxes are selected.

    5. Deselect any other content that you do NOT want to import into Canvas
    6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Next. The Confirmation and review page is displayed
    7. Everything with a green check mark will be included in the backup file. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Perform backup
    8. A status bar is displayed with the percentage of the backup that is complete
    9. When the backup is created, you will see a success message. Click Continue
    10. Scroll to view the User private backup area
    11. The backup you just created is displayed. Click the Download link
    12. Follow the browser directions to save the backup to your computer


      We recommend that you save the backup to your desktop. This will make it easy to find when choosing the backup file in Canvas

  2. Import the file into Canvas
    1. Access the Canvas course that you want to import the Moodle content into
    2. On the left side of the page, click the Settings link. The Course Details page is displayed
    3. On the right side of the page, click Import Content into this Course. The Import Content page is displayed
    4. In the Content Type drop-down list, select Moodle 1.9/2.x
    5. In the Source area, click Browse. Navigate to and select the Moodle backup file
    6. In the Content area, select All content
    7. Click Import. All content will be imported into your Canvas course
