In order to prepare content or use Canvas for non-semester work, you can request the following Canvas courses:

  • Development: Used to create new course content. You do not teach from this type of course; it is just a placeholder to be used to setup a course before the official Banner course is added to Canvas
  • Project: A course for uploading information that a group of people needs. An online course where participants can collaborate via discussions

    Canvas Gradebook!

    The Canvas Gradebook is NOT available to students in a Project course

  • Quality Matters (QM): Used for faculty participating in QM Review process
  • Training: A formal training course where a user goes through all the material, takes a quiz that must be passed, and gets a grade. Example: Security Awareness Training 

Cross-listed or Combined Course

If you need a cross-listed, or combined Canvas course, follow these directions

  1. Open the Canvas Course Request form
  2. Click NinerNET Login

  3. Enter your NinerNET credentials; your username and password
  4. If necessary, scroll down the page to view the Your Information area and enter the following information:
    1. In the NinerNET Username text box, type your username
    2. In the First Name text box, type your first name
    3. In the Last Name text box, type your surname
    4. In the Department text box, type the department you work for
    5. In the Email text box, type your UNC-Charlotte email address
    6. In the Phone text box, type a number where you can be reached in case of questions
  5. In the Course Information area, enter the following information:
    1. In the Course Type area, select the type of course you need. Your choices are:
      1. Development: Used to create new course content. You do not teach from this type of course; it is just a placeholder to be used to setup a course before the official Banner course is added to Canvas
      2. Project: A course for uploading information that a group of people needs. An online course where participants can collaborate via discussions. Students will NOT be able to access the Canvas gradebook

      3. Quality Matters (QM): Used for faculty participating in QM Review process
      4. Training: A formal training course where a user goes through all the material, takes a quiz that must be passed, and gets a grade. Example: Security Awareness Training
    2. In the Is the grade book necessary? area, choose whether or not you will use the gradebook . Students will NOT be able to access the Canvas gradebook in a Project course
    3. In the New Course Name text box, type the name you would like for your course
    4. In the What is the purpose of the course? text box, type a brief description of what you will be using the course for
  6. If you chose Training Site in the Course Type area, you will be asked the following in the Training Site Questions area:
    1. In the How many participants will be involved? text box, type the maximum number of participants you expect to use the course
    2. In the Do all of the participants have UNC Charlotte accounts?, specify if all participants have a NinerNET Username and password. The default answer is Yes
    3. In the How long will the course be taking place? text box, type the number of months or years the course needs to be active
    4. In the How long do the participants need access to the course? text box, type the number of months or years participants need access to the course
    5. In the Does access need to be restricted to a certain group of people? prompt, specify if this course is for a specific group of participants. The default answer is No
    6. In the Is this Course Affiliated with a Continuing Education Program prompt, specify whether or not this course is part of Continuing Education. The default answer is No
    7. In the text box, specify what department is funding the course
    8. In the If uploading documents, what formats are required? text box, enter the types of documents you will be uploading
    9. In the Will you be using quizzes? prompt, specify whether or not you will be administrating Canvas quizzes
    10. In the Is activity tracking or a certificate of completion necessary? prompt, specify whether or not you need to track activity or present a certificate
    11. In the Name any publisher's content, course packs, or external modules needed text box, type the name of the publisher if you are using external content
  7. Click Submit. Your course request will be forwarded to The Center for Teaching & Learning. You will be notified when your course is created
