Transcription is the process in which speech or audio is converted to a written text document. Audio files should be transcribed for accessibility reasons.

Closed caption is used for video files and relies on transcription. The transcription is divided into chunks or caption frames and time coded-to video.  Live closed captioning can be accomplished through automated tools or by an individual typing the transcript in parallel with participants and/or content provider(s) sharing video and audio.

  1. WebEx has a closed caption option that relies on a person transcribing audio during a meeting - see this WebEx FAQ for more details.
  2. WebEx does not have automated closed captioning. Google Meets provides that service - see this Google FAQ for more details.
  3. Additional pay for service WebEx options are possible but not included in our current university enterprise agreement.
